On the Trail of the Glaciers - Andes 2016, fourth expedition kicks off

On Thursday 11 February, the expedition "On the Trails of the Glaciers - Andes 2016" will set off, heading this time to the "deep South" of the world, to Tierra del Fuego and the Patagonian Andes. The team, consisting of photographers, film-makers and researchers, will work in those pristine lands for more than 2 months.

The objective of this new expedition, organised thanks to the contribution of Enel Green Power, MC-link and Gitzo, will be the continuation of the photographic documentation work already started on the project's three previous expeditions, which took place in Karakorum, Caucasus and Alaska.

Thanks to this new expedition, the archive produced by Fabiano Ventura is a candidate to be the most important documentation dedicated to the Earth's glaciers, realised through the technique of comparative photography (repeat photography: photographic comparison between historical and modern images obtained from the same shooting point in order to obtain a perfect superimposition).

3D models of the 'Exploradores' glacier in Chile will also be created using images acquired from the ground, from drones and from satellites, in order to increase understanding of the effects of climate change in relation to the phenomenon of glacier retreat. These techniques are absolutely cutting-edge and are being applied for the first time in this sector by Italian researchers.
