After Karakorum, Caucasus, Alaska and the Andes, the fifth expedition of the ten-year project ‘On the Trails of the Glaciers’ is leaving for the Himalayas on 20 April. Following in the footsteps of the first expeditions that attempted the ascent of Everest. The aim is to document, with both photographic comparisons and remote sensing, the impressive change of the glaciers over the last 100 years.
The expedition, whose main sponsor is Enel Green Power, which has always supported the project, will further expand the archive produced by Fabiano Ventura. This is the most important documentation dedicated to the effects of climate change realised through the technique of comparative photography.
Like the previous expeditions, this one will also have an important scientific impact. In fact, the Department of Earth Sciences of the University of Milan will carry out remote sensing work to study the mass balance of the glaciers visited by the expedition team.The departure of the expedition to Everest (8848 m) and Kangchenjunga (8586 m) is also mentioned today in an article in National Geographic Italia, which from this year will be the project’s media partner, following the team on its most important Himalayan stages.
This partnership is also consolidated by the presence of the exhibition ‘On the Trails of the Glaciers’ at the National Geographic Science Festival in Rome, which will be held at the Auditorium Parco della Musica from 16 to 22 April. During the same period, on 17 April, the exhibition will also be presented in New Delhi, at the Italian Embassy in India, on the occasion of the Italian Research Day in the World.
During the expedition, which will return on 8 June, director Federico Santini will be in charge of filming the videos for the production of the documentary.
