For the joint celebration of the first World Day for Glaciers and World Water Day, a high-level event will take place on 20-21 March 2025 in UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. This event will serve as a platform for dialogue and action regarding the state of the world’s glaciers and their impacts on global water security, communities, and ecosystems.
On this occasion, the Macromicro association will be present in Paris with several contributions: on 20 March, the results of the project ‘On the Trail of the Glaciers’ and its exhibition ‘Earth’s Memory’ will be presented at the side-event entitled ‘Chronicles of Cryospheric Loss: Interweaving Science, Art and Voices from the Ice’. In addition, a number of comparative photographs, taken as part of the ‘On the Trail of the Glaciers’ project, will be displayed both in the UNESCO exhibition, set up from 1 March to 30 April on the outside railings of the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, and on panels and a TV inside the building during the two-day celebration.
In December 2022, the UN General Assembly declared 2025 as the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation (IYGP 2025), accompanied by the proclamation of March 21st of each year as the World Day for Glaciers, starting in 2025. In addition, UN-Water Members and Partners decided to align the World Water Day theme, held annually on March 22nd as “Glaciers’ preservation”.
As part of the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation 2025, a joint celebration of the World Day for Glaciers and World Water Day will be organized to highlight the interconnected challenges of water security and climate change. This combined event will serve as a platform for dialogue and action regarding the state of the world’s glaciers and the impacts of the melting cryosphere on global water, food and energy security.
The 2025 global campaign for the World Day for Glaciers and World Water Day, will highlight the various impacts of glacier changes on downstream communities and ecosystems, and the need for developing water-related adaptation strategies.
