Macromicro officially announces Shifting Sea, an ambitious new project dedicated to exploring the impacts of rising sea levels around the world.
The project is distinguished by its interdisciplinary approach, integrating scientific research, artistic production, and public outreach with the goal of making complex environmental issues accessible to a broad and diverse audience. Through 18 international expeditions to some of the world’s most vulnerable regions, the initiative will generate extensive documentation that will form the basis for documentaries, traveling multimedia exhibitions, educational programs, and outreach activities aimed at schools, cultural institutions, and the general public.
The project is being developed in collaboration with an international Scientific Committee and leading research institutions, ensuring both the scientific rigor of its content and the cultural impact of the initiative.
The destinations include historic cities such as Venice and Alexandria, major coastal metropolises such as Miami and Hong Kong, as well as Pacific island nations including the Marshall Islands, the Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu, where erosion and flooding are already threatening communities, freshwater resources, and agricultural land.
By bringing together photographers, filmmakers, scientists, and communication experts, the project will investigate the ongoing transformations affecting marine and coastal environments, their environmental, socio-economic, and anthropological implications, and the mitigation and adaptation strategies currently being implemented or under development.
The project’s outcomes will be presented through museum exhibitions, educational resources, school programs, and documentary productions, with the aim of raising awareness among citizens and decision-makers about the urgent need to adopt effective adaptation and mitigation strategies in response to a phenomenon that threatens nearly one-third of the world’s population.
Shifting Sea is currently seeking funding and is open to international partnerships.
