In the December issue of Civiltà dei Dati, the magazine published by Fondazione Leonardo, Fabiano Ventura presents Twins in Time, an article that traces the invisible thread connecting the world’s mountain peaks and coastlines.
After thirteen years spent documenting the retreat of the planet’s largest glaciers through the On the Trail of the Glaciers project, Macromicro is now turning its lens toward the seas and coastal regions with its new initiative, Shifting Sea.
The article explains how rising sea levels, driven by both the thermal expansion of seawater and the melting of polar and mountain ice, are already reshaping the geography of our planet and threatening the lives and livelihoods of hundreds of millions of people.
Through a range of methodologies, including timelapse photography, 3D modeling, drone imagery, aerial surveys, and satellite observations, the latter provided by the European Space Agency, the project aims to create an extensive visual archive and a new collective memory of the world’s most vulnerable coastal areas. These include historic cities such as Venice, major metropolitan centers like Miami and Hong Kong, and the island nations of Oceania.
Combining photography and science, Shifting Sea adopts a multidisciplinary approach to communicate the urgency of a profound cultural shift in how humanity understands and responds to climate change.
The project’s scientific committee includes researchers from the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), the National Research Council (CNR), and several Italian and international universities. The project is currently seeking funding and international partners.
