“THE CLIMATE TO COME”
by Giorgio Pacifici and Andrea Martino
It is not the first time in the history of our planet that the poles melt, the waters of the oceans rise and extreme climatic events follow one another. Today, however, scientists are able to study what is happening and make predictions. How much pollution affects global warming, and how much uncontrolled urbanization. And what consequences will there be for our land if states are unable to take cover. This is confirmed by the results of a ten-year project, entitled “On the trail of the glaciers”, which is monitoring the Earth’s most important glaciers through the method of comparative photography between historical and modern images, the satellites that photograph from miles away the shrinking polar ice and snow that seemed eternal on the world’s highest mountains. We are told by scholars, who measure with coring the frozen layers formed over millennia and today are at risk. The rise in temperature with its climatic repercussions has an impact on water reserves and agriculture. Producers are running for cover and adapting themselves. Tropical fruits are cultivated also in Italy. Fish farms suffer from the heat and must be adapted.
