ON THE TRAIL OF THE GLACIERS - ALASKA 2013 THIRD EXPEDITION KICKS OFF

The third expedition of the project "On the Trail of the Glaciers" will start on 22 July. The team, made up of glaciologists, photographers, mountaineers and a TV crew, will, this time, have as its destination the ice of Alaska. Alaska is home to the largest number of mountain glaciers on our planet, 75,000 km2, according to the USGS (US Geolocical Survey), about 35 times the glaciers of the Alps.

The particularly cold climate, the abundant precipitation and the particular shape of the glaciers also make this area particularly interesting from a scientific point of view.

For this expedition, which will take place in Glacier Bay National Park, the Macromicro association has set up collaborations with some well-known research institutes, in particular, with the National Snow and Ice Data Center of Boulder, Colorado, which manages the world archive of photographs and scientific data on glaciers, and with the Italian Glaciological Committee, which has been promoting and coordinating research in the field of glaciology in Italy since 1895.

No less important are the partnerships with the American Embassy in Rome, the Italian Embassy in Washington, and with important Italian institutions that have supported the project since its inception.
