Conference in Milan: "Fifty years after Guido Monzino's Everest expedition"
Tomorrow 5 May in Milan, at Villa Necchi Campiglio, the Fondo per l'Ambiente Italiano (FAI) has organised a conference dedicated to the famous mountaineer and explorer Guido Monzino.
The testimonies and stories of the historic 1973 feat, in which Monzino led the first Italian expedition to the summit of Everest, will be brought up to date against the backdrop of the climate crisis, of which the glaciers are reliable sentinels.
Guido Monzino's Everest expedition fifty years ago was an epic feat that contributed to the history of mountaineering. Monzino, known for being the founder and president of the Courmayeur Guide Company, led an Italian expedition that reached the summit of Everest in 1973.
The conference organised by the FAI wants to commemorate this historic feat and reflect on the evolution of the landscape and climate over the last fifty years. The study of glaciers and the mountain environment is crucial to understanding climate change and its effects on nature and society.
Fabiano Ventura, presenting the results of the project "On the Trail of the Glaciers", will focus on the landscape of glaciers transformed by the climate crisis, testifying to an actualisation of the work carried out by the great photographers and explorers of the past for climate studies.
The event will be held at Villa Necchi Campiglio, Via Mozart 12, Milan, and will be introduced and moderated by Daniela Bruno, FAI Deputy Director General for Cultural Affairs.
